The Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society was established in 1781, with the object of promoting the advancement of education and public interest in any form of literature, science, arts or public affairs. Our Society is the first and oldest Literary and Philosophical Society in the World, and the second oldest Learned Society in the United Kingdom. Our past members have included John Dalton, Dorothy Hodgkin, James Prescott Joule, Margaret Pilkington, Peter Mark Roget, Ernest Rutherford and Alan Turing. We have about 350 members, mainly in the Manchester area.
With our usual lectures being cancelled until further notice, and most of us now self-isolating in our homes, we created this online forum to bring our members together to try something new and to keep the discussion for lively minds flowing!
Every time you join a discussion, contribute a story, experience, or idea, you're building a knowledge base every member of this community can tap into - to keep learning, stay connected and be inspired!
